DECADES of war have failed to damage the world’s second largest rainforest — but peace could be its undoing. Environmentalists last week warned that plans to kick-start the Democratic Republic of Congo’s economy could see a 60-fold increase in logging.

Joseph Kabila, president of Congo, toured Europe last week calling for logging companies to invest there. And an overhaul of the country’s forestry law, being organised with the help of the World Bank, will later this year earmark large areas for logging.
