Strobe watcher

Flashing television pictures can trigger epileptic fits, so broadcasters try not to transmit them. But some people are susceptible to even modest levels of strobing that a broadcaster would not think to cut. Broadcast Project Research of Teddington, UK, believes it has the solution (GB 23913030).

The television signal is fed through an image-processing circuit before it reaches the set. This measures the variation of colour and brightness in the picture. The results are compared against a tolerance threshold preset by the user. When the box bleeps, the viewer simply looks away.
