Mystery virus holds off AIDS

PEOPLE with HIV who are also infected by the virus GBV-C are less likely to develop AIDS and die, a study of HIV-positive men suggests.

Jack Stapleton at the University of Iowa in Iowa City focused on a group of 138 HIV-positive men whose date of infection was known. After about six years, 75 per cent of men who had been infected continuously with the common virus GBV-C had survived, compared with just 39 per cent of men not infected with it (The New England Journal of Medicine, vol 350, p 981).
