Go for gold, not a bad case of swimmers' itch

COMPETITORS at this August’s Olympic Games could return home with more than just their medals, a specialist in infectious diseases is warning.

“If you bring people together from all round the world, they’re almost sure to share their infections,” says Nick Beeching of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the UK. Hazards lurk everywhere from bath water and soil to the bugs or blood that could be swapped between opponents in contact sports like boxing, he says.
