Seals’ fate sealed

Hunters were heading for the ice off Canada’s east coast this week in the biggest seal hunt in history. It will see nearly a million young harp seals killed between 2003 and 2005, to cut seal numbers and cater for booming Asian fur markets. The government says this will help the region’s collapsed cod stocks recover, but independent scientists say the hunt might hurt cod further, as seals eat the fish’s predators. They also say the seals are suffering because the offshore ice where they give birth each spring is shrinking.
