Wobbling the pirates

Sony has a smart idea for preventing CD and DVD piracy. The company’s pressing plant at Anif in Austria wants to press discs with a wobbly spiral of pits (EP 1396854). Before the disc is pressed, extra bits are added to the data stream to tell the player that the spiral of pits on the disc is wobbling out of true. The player uses this information to make the laser follow the physical wobble, allowing it to play the disc successfully.
