Cut the corner

By Barry Fox

There is a simple way to stop windows cracking when a building is shaken by an earthquake (WO 2004/22872).

Penn State University says the sharp square corners of glass panels focus any twisting stress, resulting in fracture of the glass. But if the corners of the glass are slightly rounded, the effect is diminished. The ideal radius of curvature is 19 millimetres, regardless of window size. This is not so large as to spoil the weather seal in a square frame, so the idea can be used with existing frames.
