COLLECTORS like first editions, noted writer Michael Holroyd; authors like the second edition. We should be as pleased as Christopher Chippindale that his classic Stonehenge Complete now has a third life. “Not enough new study is being done,” he says of the nine documented centuries of scrutinising the world’s favourite stone circle. Would-be researchers doubtless quake at the detail, insight and wit of this superbly illustrated chronicle.

So what’s new in this expanded edition? Added previously were crop circles, feminists, the Battle of the Beanfield, designation as a World Heritage…
