Survival is never easy – especially, it seems, if you are a member of a species on the verge of extinction.

Just months after scientists reported that populations of the highly endangered mountain gorilla were recovering in the Virunga National Park, which lies in the Democratic Republic of Congo close to the borders of Rwanda and Uganda, it has emerged that illegal settlers have destroyed much of their prime habitat.

According to evidence uncovered by the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature, and reported by the wildlife organisation WWF on Monday, several thousand people moved into the park during May…
