IN the words of the Duke of Gloucester on greeting Edward Gibbon, this is another damned thick square book. It is formidably heavy and has an index of around 14,000 entries. But the scope of this monumental work is immense, stretching from the earliest use of tools to the present age of technology. It comes as a relief that it is easy to handle because of its system.
