Always on, always under attack

One in three PCs is now infected with a virus, spyware or a covert dialler. Unless the always-on, internet-connected home entertainment PCs somehow manage to protect themselves from these intruders, people investing in such systems will have to become experts on computer virus protection.

Spyware secretly transmits your personal data (Âé¶¹´«Ã½, 26 June, p 24) while diallers wait until the keyboard has not been used for a while – indicating that there is unlikely to be anyone sitting at the computer – and then makes a call to a premium rate phone line, running up heavy charges.
