Bird flu hits back

AS THIS year’s second outbreak of bird flu lethal to humans brews in Vietnam, the country’s handling of the crisis is coming under fire. There is no hint yet of the source of the latest infections, which killed a baby, a young boy and a 25-year-old woman earlier this month.

On Monday, a Vietnamese health spokesman confirmed that the cases were caused by the same viral strain, H5N1, that killed 24 people in February. Several other possible cases are under investigation, and the country’s claim on 30 March that it was free of bird flu is looking increasingly shaky.
