Too hectic? Try The Sims 2 (EA Games, PC, The Urb for PS2, £39.99). As in its predecessor, a player creates their own virtual world full of autonomous characters, or “sims”, with distinct personalities, needs and desires. The new game gives sims memories, genetically inherited characteristics and lets them age.

Another impressive sequel is Everquest 2 (Ubisoft/Sony Online Entertainment, PC, £34.99). This “massive multiplayer online role playing game” is set in the world of Norrath and players assume the role of fantastic creatures. I lost count of the quests to complete.
