By David Tomlinson

1 December 2004

In contrast, The Birds of Dorset isn’t going to have a great deal of appeal beyond the county’s boundaries. But for anyone with a serious interest in the county’s avifauna, it is a must.

George Green has given us a hugely detailed 500-page book (Christopher Helm, £40), discussing all 355 species on the county list. The depth of coverage is remarkable, from spring arrival dates for migrants to distribution maps for many of the breeding birds. One for locals.
