Review 2004: Binge drinking

THIS year we got smashed, tanked up, trollied, pie-eyed, caned, wankered, mullered, inebriated, wrecked, pissed, slated, hammered, paralytic and well and truly out of our trees. We have more words for getting drunk than we do for being in love.

And for millions, the hangover is not going to be solved with a couple of Alka-Seltzers. Heavy drinkers risk thrombosis, heart disease, all manner of cancers, cirrhosis, high blood pressure – even sudden cardiac death.

Yet the boozing continues, despite increasing official disapproval. In March, the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism announced a formal definition for the behaviour.…
