Young blood restores body's healing powers

THE blood of young mice has the power to heal – and surprisingly it seems to have little to do with the stem cells it contains. If the factors responsible can be identified, it might be possible to develop drugs that help older people recover from injuries more quickly.

That is the conclusion of Thomas Rando of Stanford University in California. He and his colleagues stitched together pairs of almost identical mice of different ages to create artificial conjoined twins. The mice gradually grew connecting blood vessels, so they came to share the same circulatory system.
