The hidden cost of fighting bioterror

ON 2 OCTOBER 2001, with the US still reeling from the 11 September attacks, 59-year-old Robert Stevens, a photo editor at a Florida newspaper, was admitted to hospital. He died three days later, the first victim of a series of anthrax mailings that caused widespread disruption and fear.

The perpetrator of the anthrax attacks has yet to be identified. But genetic tests on the strain mailed to media outlets and politicians have shown it was identical to one held by the US military. One theory is that the attacker was a US researcher who felt a higher priority needed to…
