Birdwatchers – geeks of a feather?

FOR years, the media went out of their way to portray birdwatchers as a group of geeks living on the fringes of society. The image that they painted was of outdated clothes, a one-track mind and no friends. Then a few years ago it all changed. The press decided that it would be more interesting to portray birders as mainstream. Suddenly they weren’t the fashion-impaired social misfits of years past. Overnight they became rational, hard-working people, with a normal healthy interest in birds.

Well, I’m here to tell you that the media had it right the first time. Serious birdwatchers are complete and total freaks, worthy…
