Mystery over Chinese denial of wildfowl flu deaths

Many questions still surround the deaths of thousands of waterfowl at a huge salt lake in the western Chinese province of Qinghai.

After officially reporting the deaths of more than 500 geese, gulls and ducks from H5N1 bird flu, Jia Youling, head veterinary officer for China’s ministry of agriculture, told journalists that there were more than 1000 dead birds. The same day “nine young people” in the province anonymously posted a picture on Boxun, an open-access Chinese-language weblog (), apparently showing many thousands of dead birds.
