Cute additions to the lemur clan

Nicknamed the eighth continent for its astonishing biodiversity, Madagascar continues to reveal more surprises – and they don’t come much cuter. Biologists have discovered two new species of lemur, an endangered group of primates that evolved before monkeys and apes.

Peter Kappeler of the German Primate Centre in Göttingen and his colleagues analysed morphological, genetic and behavioural data from separate populations of the giant mouse lemur Mirza coquereli. They believe the two groups are distinct enough for one of them to be reclassified as a different species, now known as Mirza zaza.
