TB could make a European comeback

EUROPE has long seen tuberculosis as a disease of the past, prevalent in times of poverty and primitive health systems. But unless the region raises its game, it could see a resurgence of this often fatal disease.

Across 13 western European countries just 74.4 per cent of TB cases are cured – only fractionally more than the 73 per cent cured across Africa. That’s well below the target of 85 per cent set by the World Health Organization, and way behind China, which cures 91 per cent of sufferers.
