High on a hill was a lonely rover

The Mars rover Spirit has finally crawled to the top of Husband Hill in the Red Planet’s Gusev Crater and the view is spectacular – the crater is 160 kilometres in diameter.

The first major peak scaled by the rover has given it a unique vantage point over the dusty landscape below and allowed scientists their first full view of the other side of the hill. During its time at the peak, the rover will examine rocks to determine their composition, take high-resolution panoramic pictures of the view and scour the area for places to explore next. “Scientists are very eager…
