Great libraries take to the net

THE European Commission has unveiled plans to create a digital library of Europe’s manuscripts, books, photos and sheet music.

Under the proposal, European libraries, archives and museums will digitise some of their collections and make them accessible online.

The proposal mirrors plans by Google and Yahoo to create their own digital libraries. Last week Yahoo announced that it would help digitise 18,000 works of American literature, alongside content from other national archives, as part of the Open Content Alliance, which also includes Hewlett-Packard.

Google plans to digitise content from university libraries such as those of Harvard, Stanford and Oxford.…
