In a lather over badger brushes

THE last thing a man wants in the morning, one would think, would be a badger rubbing against his face. Yet DNA tests show that many shaving brushes are made from the hair of protected Eurasian badgers.

Shaving brushes can be made of badger hair as long as it comes from the hog badger (Arctonyx collaris), a native of south-east Asia, which is not protected. The Eurasian badger (Meles meles) is protected under the Council of Europe’s Bern convention and by national laws in most European countries, except France.
