No slowing in AIDS calamity

It’s a record no one can be proud of – 40.3 million people worldwide are living with HIV. This year alone, over 3 million people have died from AIDS, 2.4 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa.

An “unprecedented response” is needed to contain the pandemic, according to Peter Piot, executive director of the UNAIDS agency. The annual AIDS Epidemic Update from UNAIDS and the World Health Organization, published on Monday, says a comprehensive prevention package could avoid 55 per cent of new infections in sub-Saharan Africa that could otherwise occur between now until 2020.
