Chasing Spring by Bruce Stutz

By Ehsan Masood

11 January 2006

THE sense of mortality that comes with heart surgery can induce a desire to fulfil ambitions. For recovering patient and nature writer Bruce Stutz, the result was a drive across the US to witness the unfolding of spring. His heart-warming account of that journey is three things: personal travelogue, popular science book and a gentle warning of the risks from global climate change. Stutz is at his best when describing the seasons. But his point about carbon emissions won’t be helped by his choice of vehicle: a 1984 Chevrolet Impala with a 3.8-litre engine.
