New Orleans warning

The US Department for Homeland Security was warned just a day before hurricane Katrina struck that New Orleans could be severely damaged, documents released on Monday reveal. The National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center informed the federal government of the danger in a report dated 28 August 2005.

Oldest ice

The world’s most ancient ice sample – possibly a million years old – has been extracted in Antarctica. Japanese researchers from the National Institute of Polar Research in Tokyo drilled more than 3 kilometres into the ice sheet. They hope bubbles in the ice will reveal information about climate change.…
