The End of Faith by Sam Harris

By Maggie Mcdonald

1 February 2006

Do we need another book on the conflict between reason and faith? Yes, if it is as well-written as Sam Harris’s The End of Faith (Free Press, £7.99). It’s an account of why he sees religions as a global problem. Harris has no problem with mystical experiences – they’re rational, he says – except for those that imply that all other mystical experiences are inferior, hence his distaste for religion.
