Star candidates for life beyond Earth

THEY are mature, stable and calm, and act as if they are taking care of someone. Not parents, but a couple of star systems we may want to study for signs of life.

Margaret Turnbull, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, presented her findings at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in St Louis, Missouri, last week. She analysed thousands of stars in a catalogue compiled by the European Hipparcos satellite mission. The rationale was to find the best stars to focus our telescopes on, based on what we know about life on Earth.…
