No Nettles Required by Ken Thompson

By Steve Head

5 April 2006

THIS cheerful hand grenade of a book debunks the myth that wildlife gardening needs large gardens, native species and beds of stinging nettles – a myth perpetuated by glossy books full of expensive gizmos and guesswork. Thompson’s BUGS (Biodiversity in Urban Gardens) programme at the University of Sheffield, UK found that a well-stocked garden with some trees, a compost heap and pond are all you need. Fantastic science writing for a lay audience, with sentences such as, “Hoverfly larvae look like lumps of animated snot…but they look far worse if you’re an aphid.”
