Confusion over the choosing of Caesarean births

WOEFUL ignorance – that’s the situation revealed by a conference held to assess the consequences of women choosing Caesarean deliveries for non-medical reasons.

In the US, nearly 30 per cent of births are Caesareans and the number is on the rise. But while anecdotal evidence suggests that more and more women are choosing Caesareans for reasons other than medical advice, there are no reliable statistics.

At last week’s conference in Bethesda, Maryland, an expert panel convened by the US National Institutes of Health urged healthcare providers to supply standardised documentation on how many Caesareans are due to maternal choice rather than medical necessity.…
