AT LAST a glimmer of hope from a country grappling with 5.1 million HIV infections, a toll to rival even South Africa’s soaring ranks. India’s numbers of HIV infections seem to be declining, at least in the worst affected south.
The news stems from an analysis of 294,000 women who attended antenatal clinics throughout India between 2000 and 2004. The results suggest that in southern India HIV infections in women aged 19 to 24 dropped by around 35 per cent, from 1.7 per cent in 2000 to 1.1 per cent in 2004.
