The Master Plan by Heather Pringle

By Richard Rudgley

3 May 2006

IN 1935 Heinrich Himmler set up a research group known as the Ahnenerbe. Its agenda was to rewrite prehistory in the light of Nazi ideology and racial theory. The group masterminded the looting of museums in occupied Poland, and was responsible for the most notorious medical experiments of the Reich. Alarmingly, Pringle catalogues the comparative ease with which many of its members re-entered mainstream academic and cultural life after the war. A remarkable book on the darkest chapter in German intellectual and scientific history.
