Carbon emissions to go on trial in US

AMERICA’S attitude to climate change is set to go on trial. The US Supreme Court decided on Monday to hear a case that could force the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from cars and other mobile sources.

Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA must regulate emissions from mobile sources that “cause or contribute to air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare”. A later section of the law defines welfare to include weather and climate effects.
