The Long Exile, by Melanie McGrath

By Alison George

19 July 2006

MOST books about the Arctic tell tales of adventurers conquering frozen wastes. Not this one. It’s the story of Joseph Flaherty, son of Irish-American explorer Robert Flaherty. Robert made the 1920s film about Inuit life, Nanook of the North; Joseph was raised by his Inuit mother in the Canadian Arctic, and in the 1950s they were taken north to uninhabited regions as part of an experimental resettlement and left to fend for themselves. Meticulously researched – McGrath lived among the Inuit for a time – this is an engaging and poignant read.
