WE live in an age of unquestioning belief, and fundamentalist religion is one manifestation of it – but it is not the only one. Millions of us blindly accept the dictates of multinational companies, the medical establishment and governments on everything from political ideology to what is best for our health, and then round on the unbelievers. Stuart Sim argues that scepticism offers a way out. Using examples from western and Islamic traditions, he shows that doubt has a long cultural history as a healthy irritant keeping complacency and arrogance at bay. We need more of it.
