Vaporisation could turn landfills into power

THE need for landfills could be eliminated by vaporising garbage and sewage to produce electricity, claims a company in Atlanta, Georgia.

Geoplasma is planning to build a huge $425 million plasma-based waste treatment plant in St Lucie County, Florida, that would destroy 3000 tonnes of trash a day in eight plasma furnaces. The waste would be heated to over 5000 °C by passing it through a hot electric plasma arc. The rich combustible gas that results could then be burnt in a gas-fired turbine to produce electricity.
