WHO issues targets to cut air pollution

It is a breath of fresh air for people living in pollution-choked cities. For the first time, the World Health Organization has issued global targets for cutting air pollution, and it says at least 2 million people could be saved from early death each year if countries meet them.

The WHO targets, issued on 5 October, demand that levels of fine particulates from traffic, industry and burning of fossil fuels be cut to a third of what they are today, especially in highly polluted cities such as Beijing, China, and New Delhi, India. “We think we can reduce premature deaths…
