A world first for Australia

Australia claims to be the first country in the world to adopt national guidelines governing the use of tissue from a human fetus in research and tissue transplants.

The guidelines are published by the National Health and Medical Research Council. They stipulate that the fetus must be the result of a miscarriage or legal abortion and that it must not be capable of survival. The fetus must not have been in the womb for longer than 20 weeks and it must weigh less than 400 grams. In all cases the woman’s consent must be obtained,…
