WHAT a pity it is that Britain’s greatest scientific instrument, the 250-foot radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, should have made its debut amid angry exchanges about its construction and cost. Last week the vast machine began experimental work, and the radio astronomers are finding that its performance exceeds their highest expectations. Scientifically, the telescope is a success, and great credit is due to Professor Bernard Lovell who planned the project when radio astronomy was still in its infancy.
