Beefed-up vaccine hits back at polio

POLIO has yet to be driven out of one its final strongholds in northern India, despite intensive vaccination campaigns designed to do just that. Now it seems that the problem lies with the vaccine. The good news is that giving a different vaccine may help stamp out polio for good.

In recent weeks, polio has exploded in the north Indian states of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar, where children are still being paralysed by polio despite getting around 15 doses of oral vaccine each, compared with 10 for the rest of India, and three in the west.
