Blood risk of vCJD highlighted

COULD the human form of mad cow disease still be stalking the UK, even though the infection has largely disappeared from cattle? That’s the fear now that a post-mortem in the UK has shown that a third person was infected with vCJD after a blood transfusion.

A total of 66 people in the UK are known to have received transfusions from blood donors who later went on to develop vCJD. Of the recipients, 34 died from other causes too soon to be due to vCJD. Eight more have now died, and three of those were infected. The remaining 24 have…
