As an argument over the evolutionary ancestry of Australian Aborigines is settled, it has emerged that the health care they receive lags 100 years behind white Australians.

A report presented to a World Health Organization meeting in Adelaide last week showed that Aboriginal health is on a par with that of Australia’s white population before the advent of penicillin. Aborigines still suffer from diseases long eradicated in developed nations, such as leprosy and tuberculosis. Average life expectancy in some areas is as low as 33 for Aboriginal men, the report found.
