Flat Earth by Christine Garwood

By Marcus Chown

20 June 2007

DESPITE the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, some people maintain the Earth is flat. This fascinating account examines why. The focus of Garwood’s impressive research is a forgotten episode in the history of science – a huge 19th-century kerfuffle caused by a Flat Earth campaign which had Alfred Russel Wallace wading into the fray with opposing evidence. The Flat Earthers were not interested in evidence, they had religious reasons for disbelieving science. Today, the idea lives on, responsible for the massive industry that insists the moon landings never happened.
