Man takes on machine at poker

CHECKERS might be dead but poker remains very much alive.

As Âé¶¹´«Ã½ went to press, two top players were taking on the poker-playing computer program Polaris in the . The contest will “assess our programs against very strong human players”, according to Jonathan Schaeffer’s team at the University of Alberta, Canada, which built the program.

Over two days, both humans are playing a four-match tournament against separate copies of Polaris. Identical cards are being dealt in each tournament, except that those dealt to the human player in one tournament will be dealt to the computer…
