Review: The Cause of Mosquitoes' Sorrow by Surendra Verma

By Jonathan Beard

8 August 2007

SURENDRA Verma assembles a punchy list of scientific breakthroughs and blunders, from ancient Egypt through to today’s news. Some entries, such as his concise explanation of the Moho boundary in seismology and its importance in understanding Earth’s structure, are golden nuggets. At other times, he opts for a silly story over a clear explanation of the phenomenon. The “one page, one discovery” format makes this a book no one is likely to read from cover to cover, but it is one you can open at any point -and be likely to learn something.
