Future Mars landers may descend on the Red Planet like creepy cockroaches. When the roach Blatta orientalis falls, it opens two rigid, flat wings and glides to its chosen landing spot. Tobias Seidl of the European Space Agency is investigating whether a cockroach-inspired descent could improve on the parachutes, braking rockets and airbags so far used for planetary landers, which must also find spots for safe landings.
