A video gaming headset that taps into that most primal of the senses – smell – is being patented by Ryan Petersen and Franz Schuette (US 2008/0049960). The headset uses the hollow microphone armature – positioned just below the nose – to deliver scents triggered by certain game actions. Chemicals in a reservoir in the earpiece are released to simulate the evocative smell of gunpowder during a virtual shoot out, say.
