Review: Only a Theory by Kenneth R. Miller

By Amanda Gefter

11 June 2008

KENNETH Miller takes intelligent design seriously. That way, he can seriously refute its claims. In Only a Theory, he gives a respectful and even sympathetic account of ID, then offers lucid explanations for why the theory doesn’t hold water. Readers put off by the anti-religious sentiments of evolution’s most outspoken defenders can take comfort in Miller’s benevolent prose. The book is strongest when Miller is debunking ID, and for this it’s a must-read, but it loses steam when he argues that our lives are instilled with value because the universe is somehow “primed for human life”.
