Record-busting cluster

The heaviest cluster of galaxies yet – as massive as 1000 Milky Ways – has been identified 7.7 billion light years away by Georg Lamer of the Astrophysical Institute of Potsdam in Germany. His study will appear in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Historic reactor listed

The Hanford B reactor in Washington state has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the US government. Hanford B produced the plutonium for the first atomic tests and the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, in the second world war. The plant was to have been dismantled during a clean-up of the contaminated site.
